We are always looking for great talent. Folly Beach DPS is an integrated public safety department in which many of our members are cross-trained in 2-3 disciplines (Police, Fire, EMS). While this is not mandatory, it is encouraged and compensated. Our full-time positions include Administration, Patrol Supervisors, Patrol Officers, Detectives, Special Service Officers (Marine & Beach), Traffic Unit Officers, Fire Supervisors, Firefighters, and Dispatchers. Part-time positions include Patrol Officers, Firefighters, Beach Patrol/Code Enforcement, and Dispatchers. For an agency our size we have plenty to offer and encourage you to apply.
Police Officer:
- $60,047.20 Base incl. holiday pay
- The Certification Stipend Program can add up to an additional $14,250 per year depending on additional certifications
- Employee Insurance is 100% paid, and Spouse/Family Insurance is favorably subsidized at 90% or higher. Medical, Vision, Dental, Prescription Coverages as well.
- South Carolina PORS retirement pension system
- Take Home Car
- All Uniforms and Equipment Paid.
- All Training Paid, Training is encouraged.
- Paid overtime opportunities are plentiful. Off-duty work is also plentiful.
- Flexibility to be the kind of Officer you want to be; work your own cases, run traffic enforcement, ride the beach, and/or interact with the citizens and visitors.

Housing Allowance:
To encourage staff to live close to the city and assist with callouts/callbacks, we currently offer a housing allowance program. $600 per month to live in the City Limits, or $300 per month to live on James Island.

Certification Stipend Program
Here are some of the certifications that can earn you additional compensation up to $14,250 annually:
- Ariel Ops or Pump Ops
- Water Rescue

- Instructor (Fire, Med, or Law Enforcement)

- DRE
- Crash Recon
- Fire Officer
- EMR
- EMT
- Paramedic
- Limited Sworn Law Enforcement
- Limited 1152 Firefighter
- NFPA Firefighter 1
- Law Enforcement Certification
- NFPA Firefighter 2
How it is paid: Your annual stipend is calculated, 1/2 is paid annually in December, the remaining half in June. The city offsets some of the taxes to get your check as close to the stipend amount as possible.
Out of state applicants? Not a problem, we can coordinate your process into minimal visits.
Certified in another state? Also not a problem, generally speaking the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy will review your certifications, and curriculum... if it meets their criteria, it is a few weeks of online learning, and a visit to the academy for some testing and you are good to go. We will assist with the process.
