Trees
As we know, trees need water to survive. Mature trees can absorb 150 gallons of water a day, naturally reducing flooding and stormwater runoff.
Trees also provide shade, which can significantly lower the temperature of an area. This cooling effect makes a big difference during the hot summer months, allowing residential properties to save 8%-12% on air conditioning costs.
The widespread canopy of oak trees and palms is what gives Folly its charm. The trees are not only beautiful, they’re also proven to reduce symptoms of asthma and stress, as well as improve energy, immune function and overall mental health.
Bonus: According to the Arbor Day Foundation, property values of homes with trees are 5% to 20% higher than similar properties without trees.
City of Folly Beach recognizes the importance of these trees, which is why they’re protected.
Folly Beach has lost over 150 trees in the last year, that we know of, due to new buildings or trees infringing on existing properties.
Native Trees
Native trees are particularly skilled at helping with flood mitigation and temperature regulation in Folly Beach since they are adapted to the local ecosystem.
