Composting

We're excited to announce a new initiative on Folly Beach in collaboration with regional government partners—a residential compost drop-off site at the Folly Beach Community Center!

This program allows residents to easily recycle their food scraps into valuable compost. To participate, simply visit www.charleston-sc.gov/compost to register, view acceptable items, and start contributing to a greener future today.

What is Composting?

Composting is nature's way of recycling organic waste, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, into nutrient-rich soil known as compost. This dark, fertile material enhances soil quality, promotes healthier plant growth, and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers in gardening, agriculture, and landscaping.

Why It Matters

Did you know that organic materials like food scraps account for a quarter of the waste collected in the Charleston region annually? By composting these materials instead of sending them to landfills, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact. Landfills emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Composting helps cut down on methane emissions, lowers waste management costs, and preserves landfill space for non-compostable materials.

Join Us in Making a Difference

Participating in composting isn't just about recycling—it's about creating a sustainable future for generations to come. Your efforts in diverting organic waste from landfills contribute directly to cleaner air, healthier soil, and a more resilient environment.
